Many homeowners are caught off guard on the rising costs associated with R22 refrigerant in their air conditioning systems. You may find on average, refrigerant costs range between $95 to $200 per pound for R22. A typical residential A/C unit holds about 5 or 6 pounds of refrigerant. That means a full refill of refrigerant would cost a whopping $650 to $1,400 for what used to be a $150 job many years ago.

Why R22 Refrigerant cost is skyrocketing?

Why is this happening? Well, environmentalists say R22 refrigerant depletes the O-zone so the Environmental Protection Agency is phasing it out. They plan to completely stop making it by 2020. As supply continues to dip, it’s only going to get more expensive as we approach 2020. You can learn more by visiting: https://www.epa.gov/ods-phaseout

R22 Refrigerant Converting Alternatives

Can I just convert my R-22 System to a R410A system? Yes and No. Converting an R-22 system to R-410A is like converting a diesel engine to run on gasoline; it can’t be done without making major changes to the entire system.

In the case of your air conditioning system, this type of conversion requires replacing the R-22 compressor, evaporator and condenser with units designed to run with R-410A. Sometimes the copper lines connecting the components also must be replaced, but it may be possible to clean, flush and dry the lines if they can handle the higher pressures of R-410A. But why go through this type of expense to still have other outdated efficiencies and outdated motors and boards. Planning and exploring replacement options is best. Custom Services 918-622-8686
